New Artist Joining us
We have a new artist joining us on Friday: Jessica Alfonso, a painter who graduated from Concordia in 2000. You can check out her work at:
www.studiodiaz.com
Also joining us will be collective members Sonomi Tanaka and Bea Parsons who had schedule conflicts in the fall but now can make art with us again. Bea was able to drop in a couple of times in the fall to work on pieces, including our squid series, part of a focus on whimsical art that was suggested by Montreal artist and instructor Holly King, an adviser to The Art Collective.
Sonomi, who suggested such themes as the Hidden Lives of Flappers series, contributed to several pieces that were included in the Babies and Bestiary show presented in March 2004 at the Art Matters festival in downtown Montreal.
The show was curated by Holly and high-profile Montreal artist François Morelli, whose work was highlighted at the 2002 Montreal Biennale. Holly, whose performance art pieces broke new ground in Quebec, has work in several Canadian museum collections and had a solo show at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Both have served on numerous Canada Council juries.
Also joining us on Friday will be Nathalie Quagliotto, a member of the Painting and Drawing Association, who worked with us on the large-scale interactive piece at our VAV Gallery show in November. Nathalie also came to one of our special regular meetings held in the VAV Gallery during the show, when we began our Art Machines piece. Collective member Jarmila Kavena, who had a show in Chicago last summer, is completing the piece, following a suggestion made by David Moore, a Montreal artist and art professor who also gives advice to the collective. David suggested the large-scale pieces be completed by a single artist to allow for a unifying completion process, making it easier to have a coherent final piece.
Also on this week is collective member Robert Winters’ show, Laterna Phantasmagoria, in the Visual Arts Building lobby. A photo from the show’s opening on Jan. 10, 2006, is in our photo gallery. Robert presented the show as part of his work with Eric Simon, a visiting professor in the Studio Arts department at Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts.
We’re meeting as usual in Room VA 315 in the Visual Arts Building and everybody is welcome. 10 o’clock to 130.
Fresh bagels, coffee, juice and other refreshments will be available.
If you can’t make it, pass on a suggestion about a theme we could work on.
