In case you got lost, this is the link to the whole set of additional pictures from the Italy trips I did in May and June. As of today, some pages are still not there, but most of it is included.

Never

Never, ever, never ever log in as Root.

This is written in any good Linux book. But we all think that we are smarter than the other guys...

So this morning I made a mistake when trying to make a backup copy of files on my server, the last backup before my trip on saturday. I lost the server! Nothing was working...

Luckily, I was not in Europe yet and I was able to go to the server. It wouldn't even let me login from its keyboard!!! I had to use some tricks... but I was finally able to get in and restore the missing files from a RECENT BACKUP.

MAKE BACKUPS and of course, never ever log in as Root.

Then, at the place where they keep my server, they said that it wasn't that bad. They still remember the night before the Christmas party when I went in the server room to work on my server, put it back on the (top) shelf and it toppled over, pushing a production server (one of the accounting machines) of onto the cement floor. I was lucky that time too since we had a spare server with the same hardware configuration and I was able to get everything up and running within a few hours.

But I was banned from the server room after that!!! (even though I was a co-owner...that's how bad they feared my incursions in the servers environment). Today I was given a small shelf to work from (standing room only) and was not allowed to physically move anything.

In the end it all came together. I made a manual backup before I left the server. It's running Linux, so unless something drastic happens in the server room (like the usual flood through the ceiling!) i shouldn't have to worry about the machine for at least a year.

Remember: Never ever...

The dog is ready!

MacIntosh is ready. The official Vet-stamped papers are with my airplane ticket.

Good to know one of us is ready!

It's always when I get closer to departure that I realise that there is so much to do. So the next 3 days are going to be TOTALLY insane!

The state of the affair

Packing is happening! (but very slowly. This is the state of the affair.
Just a table full of stuff, mostly electronics, that may, or may not,
make it to final selection.)

One week

The final stretch. In exactly one week we will all be getting ready to fly to Gojace, via Munich.

Much to do. Wow! Time to make a list! Maybe also get ready...pack...

I will be away for over 2 months, so that complicates things.

About Slovenia...

Well... it's time to start writing again.

We are laving for Slovenia soon (July 31st). Of course we haven't started anything serious like packing yet, but some agenda items had to be addressed. For example, the dog needs to have all the required papers ready to be able to travel with us. Well, not to be able to travel with us but to be able to get out of the airport in Germany!
There are a few more things to care care of, but everything is happening according to plan (being non-existent, which makes it easier!).

The plan is to land in Germany (Munich) and take possession of our rental car to drive to Gojace. We have a few friends visiting this year, but more on that later...

I will post occasionally until we leave, as usual.
